Language Development and Teaching Skills
Language Development and Teaching Skills is one of our two-week summer language courses for people teaching English as a foreign language.
The course is very practical and you will work in a group of other like-minded English language teachers. This gives you the opportunity to try out different classroom techniques with each other.
Over two weeks we look at a variety of teaching communication skills, from how to build students’ confidence to successful ways of teaching grammar. We look at the types of language you can use, and effective classroom management. The course will help you plan stimulating English language lessons for different types of learners.
Course information
• Language Development and Teaching Skills is aimed at teachers whose first language is not is not English. However you do need a good standard of written and spoken English equivalent to the Cambridge First Certificate (FCE) or CEF B2
• Classes are held from Monday to Friday between 1.15-4.15pm.
• The minimum age is 18 years old and the maximum class size is 1
Life in Britain – Bringing Culture to the Classroom
Explore the language, literature and culture of modern Britain with this two week course for English language teachers.
Life in Britain – Bringing Culture to the Classroom is ideal if you teach English as a foreign language overseas. We focus on British culture, to give you a better idea of the music, media, fashion, art, law, politics, film, education and modern literature that is popular in this country.
For English teachers working abroad this course will improve your use of ‘everyday’ English in the classroom, and your understanding of contemporary British culture. It will help you integrate culture when you teach English as a foreign language.
Course overview
• Life in Britain – Bringing Culture to the Classroom expands your knowledge of contemporary culture in English-speaking countries, with a focus on Britain.
• The course is aimed at teachers whose first language is not is not English. However you do need an advanced level of competence in English, equivalent to Cambridge Advanced Certificate or CEF C1.
• Classes are Monday to Friday from 1.15-4.15pm
• The minimum age is 18 years old and the maximum class size is 15 students.
Classroom Skills for Secondary Teachers
Classroom Skills for Secondary Teachers is a special two week teaching development course for English language teachers. It is aimed at teachers working in the UK or overseas whose first language is not English.
Classroom Skills for Secondary Teachers is a very practical course in which we look at the different communication skills for teaching children (10-12 years) and teenagers (13-15 years).
We will show you some of the best ways to practise English language skills with your students, and give you techniques for improving their pronunciation. The course will also demonstrate effective teaching classroom management.
We also evaluate the teaching materials available for this age range to help you choose the best resources for planning and delivering your own English language lessons.
Course overview
• By the end of the course you will have examined the relevant aspects of child development, and increased your all-round proficiency in English.
• Other topics can be added to the syllabus including project work for younger learners, using songs in class, and incorporating video into lessons
• You need a good standard of English equivalent to the Cambridge First Certificate (CFC) or CEF B2.

Current Trends: Theory and Practice in English Language Teaching (ELT)
Current Trends: Theory and Practice in English Language Teaching is a special teaching development short course for English language teachers. It is aimed at teachers working in the UK or overseas whose first language is not English.
Over two weeks we look at the underlying principles of teaching a second language, and give you practical techniques for implementing ELT methodology.
You’ll learn how to motivate students, how to use technology in your lessons, and how to design a syllabus. We also show you how to cope with large classes, how to test students, and how to implement task-based learning.
Studying alongside other English language teachers will improve your teaching communication skills.

• You need a level of English equivalent to Cambridge Advanced Certificate or CEF C1.
• Classes are held Monday to Friday between 1.15-4.15pm.
• The minimum age is 18 years old and the maximum class size is 15.
IH Practical Teacher
The IH Practical Teacher is a special two week teaching development course for English language teachers. It is aimed at teachers working in the UK or overseas whose first language is not English. In two weeks we will demonstrate practical techniques and approaches for teaching English as a second language.
We cover practical activities for listening, speaking, reading and writing, as well as showing you how to use technology in English language learning.
We look at the use of songs, games and videos for teaching second language English, as well as task-based learning strategies, and tips for preparing students for exams.
Course information
• You need to have a level of English equivalent to Cambridge Advanced Certificate or CEF C1, plus two or more years of teaching experience.
• Classes are held Monday to Friday between 1.15-4.15pm.
• The minimum age is 18 years old and the maximum class size is 15 students.
Classroom Skills for Primary Teachers
Classroom Skills for Primary Teachers is a special teaching development course for English language teachers. It is aimed at teachers working in the UK or overseas whose first language is not English.
The course will give you practical ideas for classroom management and teaching communication skills for primary level (5-10 years old). The techniques can be applied whether you are teaching English as a second language, or even as a third language.
You need a good standard of written and spoken English, and must have a level of competence equivalent to the Cambridge First Certificate (CFC) or CEF B2.
Course overview
• Classroom Skills for Primary Teachers looks at different primary teaching approaches and evaluates the teaching materials available for children at this level. We also cover teaching classroom management, and how to use English songs, games and stories for primary school learners.
• Classes are Monday to Friday from 13:15 – 16:15.
• The minimum age is 18 years old and the maximum class size is 15.
CELTA: Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults – is the most widely-recognised English teaching certificate of its kind. It’s sometimes called TEFL or TESOL. International House London’s CELTA training qualification is awarded by Cambridge ESOL and opens doors to English language teaching jobs around the world.
DELTA: A DELTA course is the ideal next step if you already have substantial experience of teaching English as a foreign language. Cambridge ESOL Delta (Diploma in English Language Teaching to Adults) is a qualification that will help further your career by deepening your understanding of the principles and practice behind teaching English to speakers of other languages. It’s excellent preparation for more senior teaching positions.
